AI doesn’t truly build websites from scratch. What ‘AI website builders’ do is assemble pre-designed modules based on your inputs, and fill add content based on your answers to pre defined questions. The website is a template in a similar way to a WordPress Theme. You are technically picking the template by giving the AI information about your business. It's pattern matching at scale. An AI website builder is like ordering a car with a list of options, you choose the type, colour, and features, and the system assembles something from pre-built parts and delivers it. The AI isn't inventing a new car, it's saying you're getting this model with package 3 and in colour X, here's what you've chosen so far. Same with an AI built website. You're getting Layout 7 with hero style 2 with some generated text.

Some of the templates are single-page style, one long page with a home section, an About section and a Contact section, not good for SEO. Others are built in the default style of individual pages which is better for SEO purposes, yes, this matters. AI built websites are built out of reusable chunks, like your chosen Hero section. AI websites to a certain degree are unique, built from chosen parts depending on your choice of parts.

I have pretty much told you how Wix and Squarespace builders work. We must remember that an AI can code a web page. I use AI a lot now, it's makes the whole process much faster but I ask the AI to do specific tasks, then I check the code. I know what questions to ask, I've been working with website code, HTML, CSS, CSS Frameworks, JS and PHP for some time now. I know my way around a webserver, I also worked with SQL for many years. I'm also very knowdgeable in Networking and data security. So the AI and I talk the same language, we think the same when it comes to building.

We're in an ever changing world, 2026 brings new developments in AI, some newer tools are closer to generating code from scratch based on your inputs. I would be very interested in buiding my very own AI website generator, after all, I only need the AI resources. We're still into pre designed websites though, an AI can produce it but it has no idea if it looks good. That's where the human comes in, the web designer, the UX person, and the client. Websites are now becoming factory items, people in offices around the world turning out pre designed websites and modules ready for an AI to select and build from it. But that's all fine for the 13.5 billion websites that exist. There is a portion of that which will never be satified by an AI. Then there's the people to manage them. So, if you want a unique website, managed for you, that's effective, valuable and well maintained, I would avoid AI. If you don't beleive me, ask an AI.
